Ted,
If your radio is old, doesn't have DCSC, and some of the more modern features today's radio's have, perhaps you should consider up grading and get a model with a WHAM mic. That way, you have the best of both worlds. I forgot to bring my WHAM mic last summer and had to rely on my hand held. Seems every time I really needed it, the batteries were down, or the range too far for its 5 wts. Check out the WHAM features in the West Marine catalog and you may be surprised at the convenience and affordability of such a system.

All, I have a VHF radio that is mounted below decks, As I recall the mic has channel controls on it but where it is located it is not practical. Has anyone ever run a long microphone cable from the radio so that the mic. can be removed from the base station and connected via the new "extension cable" some where near the wheel?
