Ted,

You've answered your own question.
Of Course you can rig an extension to the cable. Why not ?
As long as you maintain wiring continuity you can fix it anyway you wish.
Using a multi-conductor cable, with an added Pair, you could include a speaker
line to your as well.
After all , with just a couple of "Extras" included, The RAM mic is just that,
an extension cable.

I certainly would make sure that any New cable is a Shielded one. The shield
should be properly attached to the boat's Common (often called "ground" ).
When installing new wiring on a boat, there's always a chance that there may be
Magnetic anomalies pop up affecting a compass. Those can be dealt with.

There is no reason to Toss a perfectly good VHF you might have on board.
As long as you don't mess with the Transmitter circuits, you can do just about
anything with a unit.

As an alternative.
I've suggested to several friends that they pick up an old VHF, Put it into any
old Box, set it nearby or mount it in a cockpit locker/Lazarette,
Then simply hang/toss the mic close by.
With a small antenna (Could be a temporary CLIP on full sized or emergency
"Ducky" antenna).. you've got a handy VHF with all the controls close by..
Which then serves as a higher power Emergency VHF... And the only wiring one
has to do .. is 12 volt DC.

Handhelds are fine. All the newer radios are fine. But, as I said, Why throw
out a perfectly good radio when you don't have to ?

Subject: [IC27A] 2 way radio

All, I have a VHF radio that is mounted below decks, As I recall the mic has
channel controls on it but where it is located it is not practical. Has
anyone ever run a long microphone cable from the radio so that the mic. can be
removed from the base station and connected via the new "extension cable" some
where near the wheel?
