What's your budget?

Fix any safety concerns first.

Do you need new shrouds and stays (about $600 per set)?  how old are they?  Do
you have stainless (good) or cast aluminum (dangerous) spreader brackets?  If
needed, replace them now, while the mast is down.  They can be replaced while
the mast is up, but you probably need to hire a rigger and a crane to do it
safely, assuming you don't have experience working aloft.

New mainsail will cost $600-2000 for high quality dacron, depending on how many
reefs, battens, etc.

Halyards and mainsheet can cost.  A complete set of medium tech lines (halards
mainsheet vang and sheets for jibs and spinnies),  spliced to shackles as
needed runs $500 - 1500.  You can go with some stretch-ier line and knots for
cheaper.  Halyards can be replaced while the mast is up, but it's quicker and
easier while it's down.

A good place for a replacement traveller, vang, blocks, etc is Garhauer or
Catalina direct.  They both carry lots of pre-pakaged kits" for the C27.
Garhaurer is the OEM supplier for Catalina.  They used to sell full, half and
quarter kits to replace all the gear on a C27.  I didn't see it on their
website, so call them to ask.

If you want a spinnaker crane, add it while the mast is down.  Or wait until
the next time you drop the mast.   Adding a padeye for a whisker pole can be
done at any time, you can defer the cost until later.  A spinny gear kit at
Catalina Direct costs $450 (cruiser) or $800 (high performance))

You should start with a thorough inspection of the mast, looking for wear and
tear and corrosion at the fasteners and for worn parts.

Remove, inspect and replace bolts at highly stressed places as needed.  Replace
any worn sheeves and blocks with appropriately sized and specificed parts.

Replace halyards if worn and frayed .

Lazy jacks - that's a personal choice.  There's no concensus on that.  Try
sailing someone else's boat and see if you like them.  Personally, I don't see
the need for a small boat like a C27, but I ususally sail with another person.
I've lazy jacks on other boats.  But other folks love them.  Most people like
the Dutchman or in tegreated systesm with sailcovers. (I personally like the
stack packs, but they cost quite a bit.

In 2003, I spent about $2500 to replace every component on my C27 mast: wiring,
blocks, halyards, spinny gear, etc.  It already had SS spreader brackets and a
new truck on the top.  Plus I spent about $1500 (not counting my labor) to have
the rig shop repaint and repair some structural damage at the spreaders.

see http://www.blumhorst.com/catalina27/mast-repair1.htm and follow the links
for info on a (way too fancy and over-the-top) rebuilding job.

Good luck

Subject: [IC27A] Re-Rigging Questions

I recently purchased an 84 C27 Standard Rig and have the mast down and would
like some suggestions for improving the rigging. Please provide any insight on
the following.

Adding a mast eye for a whisker pole? Size needed - Source/cost?

Lazy Jacks - worth the effort/investment?

Halyards are external with wire should I change to all line and go internal?

Source for new mainsail?

Adding spinnaker crain and hardware now?

Mainsheet configuration - traveler is on cabin?

Anything else?

Thank you, any help is appreciated - Joe
