I mounted a pair of 5 1/4" Sony marine speakers on the coaming as well. They seem to be holding up alright in the weather but I know they won't last forever.
I used two existing holes in the coaming by removing broken or unused instruments. I found that mounting the speaker near the compass (within 8") throws it off. I'm not worried about it because I have a GPS but I'm still open for a better solution. I thought the speakers were shielded but I guess not. I too have speakers mounted in the cabin and use the fader to direct the sound either inside or out. I have found that with the cabin open, the sound travels just about everywhere. So while your idea to mount the speakers on the mast is a fine one, I'm not sure I've seen a need to do that. Where to run the wires (must I cut a hold in the deck for a through-fitting?)? Are there other places to run the wires out? Cutting a hole in the boat gives me heartburn--will do it if I must, but would rather avoid it! Any thoughts would be helpful.
