Our setup is two box speakers (Polk Atrium 45's) down below on the bulkheads
in the main cabin, and two more box speakers mounted to the stern rail using
removable rail clamps. I installed two wire jacks on the back ledge at the
top of the transom for the connections. It has worked great, it allows me
to take the speakers in when I am done, keeping them out of the sun and away
from temptation for someone going by in the marina, and they just take a
minute to install. IMHO, it is difficult at best to get more wires through
the compression post and the deck connectors for my lights and wind
instrument have been a weak spot so far. I am much happier with this.

I mounted a pair of 5 1/4" Sony marine speakers on the coaming as well.
They seem to be holding up alright in the weather but I know they won't last
forever.

I used two existing holes in the coaming by removing broken or unused
instruments. I found that mounting the speaker near the compass (within 8")
throws it off. I'm not worried about it because I have a GPS but I'm still
open for a better solution. I thought the speakers were shielded but I
guess not.

I too have speakers mounted in the cabin and use the fader to direct the
sound either inside or out. I have found that with the cabin open, the
sound travels just about everywhere. So while your idea to mount the
speakers on the mast is a fine one, I'm not sure I've seen a need to do
that.

I mounted two 4-inch speakers in my combing boxes in the cockpit. They
certainly aren't the greatest speakers for fidelity and power but they are
OK for me. The originals crapped out two years ago so I put new ones in last
summer. They were a bit larger (by 3/4 inch front to back) than the old ones
so I had to disassemble them and reassemble the parts inside of the combing
box to get them in.

To revive an old thread--has anyone installed speakers on the outside of the
boat? Some friends of mine have suggested intalling them in the cockpit, but
I worry that would drown out conversation (I like my tunes loud).

On my Catalina 22, I mounted two of the weatherproof box speakers on the
mast, about halfway between the deck and the gooseneck. It was nice, too,
'cause I got nice full sound in the cockpit without drowning out
conversation, AND could swivel one of them around for folks on the foredeck.
And since it was inside the shrouds, I the jib sheets never once fouled on
the speakers. Since the 22 had a poptop, I could discreetly run the
speakerwires underneath the pop top to the mast, and taped them up the
compression post and along the centerline to the opening in the ceiling
where the pop top is. No cutting, no problems. And with the indoor speakers,
I could use fade and balance to segregate sound as I needed (in case someone
wanted to nap inside while we wanted music outside, or the other way around
to have music inside only so as to not disturb neighbors at the dock).

I'd like to take that setup to the 27, but not sure it's as easy. Is it just
as okay to mount on the mast (ie: what's the crossection? Where are the
electrical wires inside)? Where to run the wires (must I cut a hold in the
deck for a through-fitting?)? Are there other places to run the wires out?
Cutting a hole in the boat gives me heartburn--will do it if I must, but
would rather avoid it!

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Shack Minimus 7 speakers that I got off ebay. They are great 2 way small
footprint speakers. In the bottom of the locker is an 8" Bazooka tube that
has its own built in amplfier. The head unit takes care of powering the
Minimus speakers. The whole benefit to a small subwoofer is that you get
bass without have to have large visible speakers. The head unit has a remote
- that is velcro'd near the companion way so I can adjust volume, station
etc from the cockpit. It also plays mp3's and has an external input for an
ipod or mp3 player. System investment was under $150 and it sound great.
