Excellent….I need to replace mine too…I did a band-aid job with the miracle
worker JB Weld on some minor holes a few years ago and it has held up well, but
I know it is time to change it.

John,

As requested, attached is a pic of my 2010 Heat Exchanger that just arrived.
Obviously, the 85 model has seen better days.

Take Care,

David,

I paid $220.00 for it, actually less than half what I would have paid Torresen,
for probably the same exact unit. I think they list an exchanger for $470.00.
Sen-dure built the original that was in my boat and the Sen-Dure rep. that I
spoke to said, that the new one is identical to the original. I'm expecting it
any day and will send you pics as soon as I get it.

Ray -- how much was the new heat exchanger? And do you, by chance, have any
photos? I have been growing concerned about my heat exchanger since we've never
serviced it in the 8 or 9 years we've owned our '88.

John,

I just recently pulled my heat exchanger to replace the zinc, hoses and clamps.
When I removed the outside plate I found fins from an old impeller that were
there who knows how long and who knows how old. On the exchanger was a stamp
with the manufacturer's name..."Sen-Dure", Bay Shore, NY. After a little
internet searching I found Sen-Dure was still in business and still making
exchangers for many different applications including and above all marine
engines.

Long story short, a gentleman by the name of "Dave" was able to tell me the
exact date that my heat exchanger was made. They had mine (and probably yours
too) in stock for almost half the price that Marine Diesel/Torresen was asking.
Given the condition of my 25 yr. old exchanger and the cost of a new one,
replacing it was a no brainer.

I would strongly recommend Sen-Dure.com if you're considering a replacement,
which it sounds like you are. They were extremely helpful, knowledgeable and
courteous...and oh yeah, the price was right too.

Good luck.

At the end of last season, I lost 4 or 5 vanes from my sea water pump impellor.
I discovered this when I tried to run antifreeze thru the pump, heat exchanger
and associated hoses and nothing came out the exhaust. I opened the water pump
and found vanes were missing. One was blocking the discharge and when I
removed it there was a more or less normal flow out the stern.

I have received different advice. A diesel engine mechanic told me you have to
find the vanes. Others have said if there is good flow out the exhaust, don’t
worry about it. I’ve decided that if I was going to 18 mile island or Madison,
IN, I would be worrying about it. I don’t want to be 12 or 35 miles from home
port and have an engine that is overheating.

I pulled the heat exchanger this afternoon, took about 2 hours. The biggest
difficulty was getting the hoses loose which have been on the boat for 25
years. I have not opened it yet so I don’t know what I will find inside.
Anyway, I’m committed, the 25 year old hoses probably needed to be changed
anyway.

I think I remember some traffic on the list several or more years ago that the
heat exchanger size was increased in later boats. Mine is a ’85, the heat
exchanger is 2 1/16 inches in diameter. I have checked CD and they do not have
heat exchangers on their web site.

Any thoughts on this? Does anyone know of a larger heat exchanger? My engine
has been running at 175 degrees which is within the range in the engine manual
although near the upper end.
