Folks:

I have a '77 with an Atomic Four Engine. I replaced the points and condensor
with a new electronic module from Moyer Marine when it was on the hard last
fall. It ran like a champ. First race out this year, we get about 2 mile out
when she starts to sputter and then she dies. Will not restart. I climb
underneath, and think it was the placement of the fuel filter. She starts back
up and runs us the rest of the way out. On the way back, same thing. Must be a
fuel delivery problem, no? I got an electric fuel pump, added it as a booster.
Same exact issue. Long story short, it turend out to be the coil. The module
has a slightly longer dwell, and it overheated the coil. I took it off, and it
looked like a bad can of Spam on the bottom. It was bulged out to a round.
Mounted the new coil off the engine on the starboard bulkhead, and it has had
no issues. Moral of the story; if you're thinking of changing out the points,
do yourself a favor and get a new coil.
