Thanks for the advice. Do not want to insult him. Just looking for best price
of course. Thought was if he is reluctant to start the bidding I would start
with a low #.

Great advice guys. I am going to caution you this. If you are in Georgia and
really want a C27 be careful what you do with this guy. There are not alot of
them in this area. I live in Jacksonville and for all the sailboats here I have
the only C27 I know of.

I am in the selling market and I say be cautius because of your last message.
If I am asking $7500 and you offer $4000. That is so far beyond a low ball
offer I would throw you off my boat. That is an insult and I personally would
ask you to and not even counter. You are cutting the guys price in half when he
is right in line with the price unless the boat is trashed. I wouldn't budge a
dollar for you after that if I even spoke to you again. IMHO that would not be
negotiating.

Thanks Joe. The boat we are looking at is an outboard. No factory inboard.
Was planning on low-balling the price but not insult the guy. Starting at 4k
and see his reaction. Will do that once we get back to the slip of course.

You didn’t say if it had inboard or outboard for motor… I have an ’81
outboard model and my boat is very similar to the one you are looking at. I
moved up to the 27 from a 22’ boat and found it very easy to make the move
from smaller to a Catalina 27. Except for momentum the boat is a sailboat and
sails like you would expect. I found the 27 very easy to sail. It has very few
quirks. Steering under power is a learning curve for any small boater when
moving up to a larger boat.

As to price, Good Old Boat magazine had an article a few years ago on buying
used boats… they said to offer way less and make the seller make a counter
offer. I found that to be good advice.

Great information and thank you to everyone who replied. The 84 Catalina 27 is
on Lake Lanier in Georgia. Never been in salt water. Sails are approx 4-5 years
old. Has a self-furling jib and a storm main. Price is below NADA at an asking
price of $7500. The owner, (he is the second owner) is motivated as he is
moving away from the state and already has a power boat for fishing. I think
the guys has a few extra toys and can't take them all with him. I have a little
sailing experience but nothing of this size. Day sailor in the garage, hobies
while vacationing but looking for something big enough for another couple and
for other boats to see. I had heard that bigger boats are easier to handle (but
will be taking private lessons to get comfortable on something this big).

This forum and the members seems to be a great place to get infomation and
thanks for any insight you may provide. Is there anyone with an 84 Cat27 owners
manual or directions on how to download from this site.

Hi Gary,

If you visit the Yahoo site (visit your group - link below) and click on
files and then scroll down you will find a document simply called Tom's
List.

It's a baker's dozen of things to check.

Since it sounds like it is in the water, when was the last time it was
surveyed? If it's not recent then I'd go through the items on Tom's List and
if this is still the one then offer to split the cost of the survey. If it
has a problem under the waterline the survey will be a godsend. Find out the
repair cost and make an offer knowing what you need to do, or walk away.
Otherwise it's a gamble she won't be a money pit.

I am looking at a 1984 Catalina 27 on Saturday. Second visit to see
her and would appreciate your insight. Deck and spars are in good
shape. Some cracking in the teak ends of the traveler. Hull is solid
from water line up. Was told keel had stainless stell bolts replaced 3
yrs ago. No inboard and has a 10hp motor.
So, what can you tell me to look for?
