Joe you are dead on regarding the differences. I hate stooping over on the 25. I had a McGregor 25 and it had similar headroom to the catalina 25. The 25's do have a pop top as did my McGregor but I never put it up (too much work). There are a bunch of 25's on the lake I sail on and only 2, 27's. I can beat the 25's but it is not easy. I have the settee layout and have lots of sleeping room for 4. Like you say the v berth is a good sail and life jacket storage area. It seems the 25 has a bigger V Berth. >>> "Joe McCary" <[email protected]> 8/1/2010 5:42 PM >>>
With any boat there are always problems, that is just part of the “pleasure” of owning a sailboat. I have an ’81 27 standard rig with the traditional interior. The V birth on my 27 doubles as a nice storage area. I can’t imagine sleeping there, it is just too small. The port settee birth is also too small to sleep in, I know. I tried. That leaves the starboard birth and the quarter birth on the starboard side. My personal preference is for the quarter birth, while it is under the cockpit it is roomy. To me one VERY important factor is standing headroom. The 27 has 6’1” in the main cabin; the headroom on the 25 is 5’8” (I read this, I have not been in one). I do mostly day sailing and occasional weekend or short trip. The storage space is more than adequate on the 27 for this type of cruising (I have an outboard model and have the area under the cockpit/behind the companionway ladder). Also, there is another factor to consider, the 27 is faster than the 25. Not much but faster. Other options to consider are draft, my 27 has 4’ fixed keel and the 25’ was offered as a fixed keel with a 5’ draft (too deep for my tastes) and for a swing keel. I owned on swing keel boat and would almost never own another, too many leaks and too much noise. They also offered a shoal draft with a 3’ draft. If I were considering a 25 that is the keel I would opt for. Joe McCary From: ic...@yahoogroups. I'm looking to buy soon and assumed th 27 was the better option. I was on another 27 owners group and was surprised to see some of them prefer the 25. It was stated the the v berth in the 25 had more room and the 25 had better storage compartments and the bulkheads (starboard) on the 27 were poorly constructed and water leaks rotted out the bulkheads. Granted these were on boat built in '75-'82. For budget reasons I'd be buying an older model. I'm hoping some one can shed some light on these issues. Thanks.
