I'm not sure how or why a mechanic would replace a stuffing box, usually
they replace the packing.

Do you know what packing material he used? There is some nice drip less
material available but it can't overcome a mechanical problem.

Was the boat on the hard when he worked on it? If so they I'd bet the shaft
is out of alignment. Boats change shape after the launch for the new few
weeks. If it was on the hard he could have done a perfect alignment job and
then they boat changed throwing it out again.

I would perform the alignment check myself and then decide if you need the
mechanic back again.

Subject: [IC27A] chronic stuffing box leak

I have a 1978 shoal draft 27 with a 1 cyl yanmar replacement engine. In the
past year the stuffing box leaks a lot after running the engine for a while.
Mechanic supposedly replaced the stuffing, helped for a while but it is
starting again. Tightening the nut helps for a short while. Where do i start
looking to solve the problem?
