it is a national level bird dog championship competition. All of us
are in "the gallery", we just tag along and watch while the
competitors on the "brace" go out with field judges leading the way, a
scout horse or two or three gait like mad across the field, just fast
and beautiful, jumping logs and bushes, tearing through dead leaves
while the hunter on his horse follows the dog and the scouts. When
the dog goes in point, the scouts whistle their loud whistles and
yell. a nd the whole thing stops DEAD. the competitor gaits up to the
pointing dog real fast, jumps down from his horse with his shotgun
already drawn from the scabbord or rifle, whatever they use, its
blanks actually, but he drops the reins and the horse ground ties, as
soon as the reins hit the ground the horse doesnt move a muscle, and
neither does the dog. Then the hunter does something that makes the
birds flush and he fires the gun. He is judged according to that. So
they get very very mad if you do anything that disturbs that and you
will get escorted out of the group if your horse acts bad, or if you
drink too much out of your little silver flask and fall off your horse
in the gallery for instance like one woman did. at 10 AM. The high
point champion goes on to the next level. I think this was a regional
championship. The winner gets a new tucker trooper saddle with a
scabbard and halter bridle and it has a brass plate saying 2007 Quail
Club Championship blah blah and some money and a trophy. Its all
about the dogs and some of them sell for 10,000 bucks and if your
horse drinks out of the dog water they come tell you if it happens
again you will have to leave. Thats a field trial.
