Hi Anneliese and others,
I have started about 20 icelandics with in the past 10yrs we have been in
ICelandics. I know thats not many. In the past yrs before we got into
icelandics I have started about 100 different breeds from arab, qh, morgans to
mix breeds. Everytime I start a young icelandic under saddle I know what they
will do and most of the time they just turn their heads and look at me like why
are you on my back? If one does all their groundwork and go slow at the horses
speed they will not buck compare to other breeds. After training icelandics I
will never train any other breed of horse accept the icelandics. Starting
another breed I never knew what they would do some just stand and few may buck.
WIth icelandics even when they are young they worry about the rider and they
really don't want to hurt the rider.

The way I train its slow and I let the horse tell me when they are ready to go
to the next step in training. Within 3 days I am riding the young horses
around the farm outside the fenced in pastures. If they get scare they just
stop and turn their heads and look for help from the riders until I tell them
its ok then they are fine. I just go slow.

If you rush a horse in their groundwork later down the road in their training
there will be holes or the horse will not understand what the rider wants.

Durning the summer I do have 1 student that comes 2 days and it all depends on
how many horses I take in for training. I exchange lessons for help.
