Palmetto bugs (really big flying cockroaches) live in the trees and in nests in the ground -- I spent my high school years near Miami and saw lots and lots and of them. But they are all over the south -- I've seen then several times while staying in the Dallas area. They are creepy, but not particularly noisy.
