when I had a horse with a weird problem, he just lay down in the middle of the trail, I read up on EPM and talked to everyone I knew about it, and nearly all agreed EPM is one of those sudden onset terrible illnesses you dont have to wonder about. Its so horrible the horse is lame and falling down etc and then dies or can not be ridden again, despite some web info I found about horses that had recovered and went on to live semi useful lives etc. So I dont think EPM is a vague symptom illness really!
