If you're talking about the cases I remember, the rude Icelandic riders
simply would not stop tolting (fast) and passed the other riders at a very
fast speed, maybe even galloping.   That was indeed rude, a breech of common
trail etiquette.  Mostly, I've heard of two different scenarios of horses
getting spooked by gaited horses.  The first is like the one you mentioned -
where the gaited horse riders are simply rude, or will insist that they
can't walk on their horses, or second, very nervous riders of non-gaited
horses who are looking for any reason to go into a panic.  The first
scenario is easy to overcome - our horses sound just like any other horses
when they walk!  And second - not much we can do about that, except not give
nervous riders reason to panic over rude gaited riders.
