it's fairly widely used for sports clothes -- my ex-roommate-the-
electrical-engineer-and-confectioner, who was a tremendous bike
commuter, used it to make bicycle pants as well. (i'm sure a google
would turn it up in more industrial settings, but this is kind of a
cottage-level discussion at this point.)
it'll probably show panty lines and such, but imho riding clothes are
(at least for me) primarily WORK clothes, and i need them to be
comfortable and practical more than i need them to preserve my vanity.
it's not as if they're transparent nightgowny stuffs -- they're just
close-woven and light. if you look at the pictures i pointed to, you'll
see the pants don't look remotely like underwear; they're a little wrinkly
on the ground but perfect in motion in the saddle.
finally, a cultural point, i don't believe in "spandex is a privilege"
or any such thing. if little kids see grown women's bodies in fitted
clothing, maybe it'll help them have realistic expectations for what
their own are going to look like sooner or later.
