most anything can be used in a punishing way :/ even bareback and bridle-less, i bet you can still hurt a horse plenty with your feet. i always carry a whip when riding stjarni, because it's the best thing for getting off deerflies. i also use it to ask him to swing his hindquarters for a turn on the forehand, and sometimes to bring his hindquarters into a better position for sidepassing. but even on the trail, where we tend not to do much lateral work, it's still great for deerflies. some folks from my barn carry flyswatters, but being small i like the extra reach of the whip. --vicka
