So is he good at keeping up in the ring, just not out on the trail? Where
are you attaching the lead line to? If you are attaching it on the under
ring on the halter try attaching it to the side ring (as long as your snap
is not too heavy to pull the halter over). It will be easier to encourage
him to keep up. If you could get someone to ride with you once or twice
they could go on the other side of Maverick and gently encourage him to keep
up, at which time you could either click him or just reward him randomly
with a treat.
Does he trot well in hand, not being ponied, in response to a verbal cue, or
a tap with a crop? It is probably more interesting for him outside the ring
and so he is distracted.
