Hi Judy,
I have my grass hay analysed and it ranges from 10% - 16% protein. I
give about 2 lbs a day of the 16% which is orchard grass and 4 lbs a
day of the 10% of what we call "meadow grass" which is a mixture of
crab grass/fescue/orchard. This works out to about two flakes in the
AM And PM for each. I give 3 oz. a day per horse of a vitamin/mineral
supplement that is manufactured by Southern States. I did give free
choice the mineral supplement but because of the molasses base they
tended to over indulge so I went to the loose mineral so I could
moniter it better. Frankly I really wish they didn't have 16% protein
but have to feed what I am given by the hay farmers in Virginia. My
Icelandics do not get grain because of the quality of their hay.
I use the nutrionist at Southern States to help determine my feeding
program. Every major manufacture of horse feeds has a nutrionist that
will help you.
