I have tried garlic (granules, powder etc) added to feed in the past and have never found it made the slightest bit of difference to the number of flies round the horses. Plus there are some schools of thought that plants from the allium family (includes leeks, onions and garlic) are actually poisonous to horses (it's certainly a proven fact that they are in large qualtities). Horses will almost never eat garlic voluntarily unless it's powdered in their feed - "stealth garlic".
