Where is it you live? Here the grass goes dormant in winter and is brown and dried out, so we plant rye which is a grass that HAS to have cold to grow, so you can have a beautiful lush green pasture in winter if you plant rye. But i dont know if that works where it snows! You can save a lot of money here on hay if you plant rye. and it grows all winter and as soon as it starts getting warm the rye dies out and the other grass comes back alive. Some people here plant clover in winter cause it adds nitrogen to the soil. I have very sandy soil, so planting rye in the bare areas makes the sand more loamy when the rye dies out.
