i firmly believe that mounting blocks are for everyone :)  so is
mounting from the ground in case of need (and that should imho be
well-practiced, so as to be as easy as possible on both horse and
rider).  but if there *is* a mounting block, why not take it a little 
easy on everyone's body and *use* it?

i think anything from a fence to a stump to a "formal" mounting block
to a water bucket to a picnic bench counts as a "mounting block", btw :)
learning to spot 'em is a skill unto itself.
