I have 10 miles of country roads to travel between my house and town. There are 5 different horses along the way that are living alone. Well one of them I see in the pasture with a cow and a herd of sheep. Ironically two of them are beautiful paints that would make a lovely pair. I always feel so bad for horses living alone. I thought I read that in some European countries it is not legal to keep a horse alone as it is considered cruel. I remember reading in one of the horse magazines that horses living alone tend to be more stressed as no other horse is there to help them feel safer. They always have to be on guard. They are also reported to spend much less time eating when living alone.
The horses are again confined to the paddock near the barn as we had another weekend of deer gun hunting season. At times I think they don't get along as I see Falki chasing Gloi off, but who's to say that he doesn't provoke it because he enjoys it. He walked into Falki's stall this morning at feeding time. He knows the routine! When he and Calvin lived together, there was much less drama, but maybe it was too boring. Gloi and Falki are often seen standing together as often as they are seen harassing one another. Who really knows what a horse likes. They are a constant source of intrigue and amusement to me. -- Anna Southern Ohio
