When we decide on a discipline, we need to take into consideration what breed is compatible with the chosen discipline.
Or, reverse that: if we decide on a breed, we need to figure out what discipline is most suited to the breed. We aren't going to chose an Icelandic Pony for jumping. All horses jump somewhat, but an Icelandic isn't the best breed to chose for jumping. Running barrels is better for a QH than an Icelandic. Our ponies can do it, but they don't have the hindquarters for duration and longevity in that area. Conformation of a horse lends them to be better in certain things, and also limits them in areas. Icelandics are not conformed to do dressage, particularly classical dressage, easily. Personally, I feel that forcing them into the dressage frames will be a big problem for the horses, physically, mentally, and emotionally; and that we may see some of the old behaviors popping up again.
