i would include "what the horse enjoys" in the list of considerations for compatibility. stjarni will never make either a top-level jumper or dressage horse, but since he loves to jump and dressage (at the level we do it) keeps him supple, low-level three-phase (jumps up to 2', intro-level dressage tests) are just about perfect for us right now. of course, he's also my parade mount and my schoolmaster, and i'm still hoping to try a short endurance/long trail ride sometime (maybe a 15-miler), with my friend and student on his 29-year-old quarab (also probably not "most compatible" with said discipline, but i expect we will have fun :) --vicka
