As Kaaren said it is about 'judgment' and lack of understanding sometimes. The approach we take when we look at animals both 2 legged and 4 legged, is that most behavior we don't like comes from a basis of fear - could be fear of getting hurt; fear of giving up control; fear of looking like a failure (ego) - a human thing etc. One person's training method is another's abuse. If something has been working reasonably well for someone, or even if it isn't, it can be hard to admit it and make a change. This is true for people in all types of relationships as well.
