Thanks, Robyn.  That is good information for me.

This is exactly what Hunter does.  In fact, when he begins to canter, I know 
that he is beginning to be at least a little fatigued.

Because I ride with a heart monitor in competition, I can  monitor how  he 
adjusts  his choice of gait  according to how he is doing cardiovascularly. 
He can really flow along at a nice flat walk and I can watch his heart rate 
drop significantly, even though he is still  covering ground.
