Hi Susan >>>Finally the vet got there, said it was foal fever, including the limping and swollen joints, gave her anti-biotics and Whisper was up shortly thereafter. The vet told me that my forcing the milk replacer down her throat kept her from a real coma and probably saved her life.
You and Whisper have a special bond. Had you ridden her mother or just liked her nature? Sometimes if we have ridden a horse and it was really special it can be challenging if the foal is not the same. I have mares that will produce foals very like them and other foals that are totally different even though they all get basically the same treatment from birth. Sometimes it works out well and other times, not so well. I find that happens with some people and dogs. They have a really special dog of a particular breed and when that dog dies and they get another one that just can't live up to the first dog. Big challenge for dog and person. How far do you live from Modesto? I just thought that if it wasn't too terribly far and you were able to take Whisper for a couple of days to work with my daughter Mandy it could give you a huge jump start.
