I have a theory as to why horses in warmer regions have longer hair than horses in colder, more snow areas. I found that Gloi's coat is shorter but denser than Falki's when he got here. Falki's seems to have gotten denser in the past 2 months that he's been here. Maybe in warmer temps the longer coat helps to 'drain' or direct the rain off the horse's back and the less dense coat would allow better comfort for warmer temps. The shorter denser hair may be better for insulation from the snow sitting on their back and the colder temps. When I was brushing Falki tonight some hair was coming out, but why not the days are getting longer and spring is coming! (Even if we are only one week into winter.) -- Anna Southern Ohio
