There is a new series on the Travel Channel called "Back to the Tribe" or Tribe Living or something. anyway, yesterdays episode was about how the tribe, I missed where they are, some primitive naked people who look vaguely aboriginal, they live on an island where there are wild herds of horses left by explorers, anyway, they have an annual horse race that is a huge deal island wide.
One man gave his good old horse he had won with several times to his teenage son to ride and had to catch and train himself a new horse, it got loose, he had to catch a new one, one man trained by desensitization by riding the horse at a canter along a path and then dozens of little naked children would come hopping out from under a banyon tree all screaming to get the horse accustomed to things. One man, the winner, would stand and love and pet on his horse until his wife would come screeching out of the hut just furious yelling at him about how he neglects his family for the horse. i felt his pain haha. They rode bareback with woven plants made into bridles. One man had a snaffle bit, but most seemed to have the "bridle" go in the mouth and work underneath like a bosal, only instead of across the nose the woven part went in the mouth. it was woven from green plant material. Right at the peak of the big race the volcano erupted and all the horses spooked but a few and it was chaos. it was a good show! I enjoyed it! and the horses were so beautiful to be wild, so glossy and fat and healthy looking... They seemed to look sorta like thoroughbreds with long bodies and high withers and even the wild ones seemed naturally a little ewe necked. Janice -- yipie tie yie yo
