When I was first looking for an endurance horse, I talked with an elderly
woman in Central California who had almost been a victim of a horse buying
scam. Fortunately, she took what appeared to be a cashier's check to her
bank where it was examined and declared not negotiable.

That hard part for me was that this was probably just the horse I needed. I
wanted to have a pre-purchase done, at my expense, before I traveled so I
would not waste a trip in case he were not sound. Because of her recent
experience, she was unwilling to do that and I ended up buying a nice local
horse instead. I still sort of wish I'd made the trip.
