I would agree.  Lee would also say that you can start with what it is not. 
There are phases that will be easily recognizable as "not this" or "not 
that".

That's a good idea, but may be limited to those who know the feel of each 
gait.  There are times when someone may think they are trotting on a gaited 
horse, when it is a stepping pace.
