I've heard that an excited pony or horse can actually draw themselves up to measure as much as an inch taller than they might measure in a relaxed environment. I don't know if that is true, but Thunder was definitely very wired the day he was officially measured. I could have had him re-measured, but in the circuit that Emily showed in, there were enough opportunities for them, and then they gradually switched to dressage anyway, where height was a moot point. Anyway, we always felt more "honest" with them competing in the slightly taller range than in the slightly shorter range - I remember a couple of parents challenging other horses who were competing against Little Susie in the "pony" classes, and that sort of thing never brought out the best sportsmanship in any contestant!
