thats a good point Sarah, sometimes someone might post and be wrong
who is a "professional" and they might feel like it could hurt their
business. But if I was looking for a gaited horse to buy, I wouldnt
go at all by their ability to judge gait by a photo. What would
bother me MOST of all is if they said they owned a foxtrotter so of
course it only foxtrots, or own an icelandic so of course it only
tolts or they own a walker so it only walks or they own a racker so it
only racks. Right there would be a huge red flag for me. There is so
much gait terminology breed to breed, and old timers who know TONS
about gaited horses will say things that you can't find in books
because the terminology is different. Especially here in the south
where a lot of rural people seem to make up their own language as they
go along haha. I have a friend who was a big lick show person in the
sixties and has been breeding sixty years and he says things like if i
ask what gait a horse does, he will say "show gait". and what a show
gait is to him, is a running walk. IF the horse is registered walker.
if it is registered racking and he says show gait, it racks. he wont
ever admit any of his are inferior in gait. But he will say "oh that
one, I'll only sell him as a trail horse." ow if someone was a horse
show judge and they didnt know one gait from another, I would not only
lose respect for them, but for the entire registry. and wonder how a
person ever got certified as a trailer or judge etc if they could not
even tell one gait from another.
