Oh -- I though you were commenting on the wild Dartmoor ponies Mic posted a 
picture of with the brands on their hips.

I have one horse micro-chipped.   It was done at the farm where he was born 
because they had so many foals every Spring to keep track of.   The  number of 
the chip is on his registration papers.   I've never had cause to see if the 
chip could be read however, so no clue as to how effective it is as an 
identifier.   It's always something I've wondered about.   The location is 
under his mane by the way.
