My friend, Shirley, was given a never-raced TB mare when she was in school at
Virginia Intermont, getting her BA in horsemanship. I think Callie (Caifornia
Girl - a clue to her age) was about 8-10 when she got her, and she died a few
years ago at age 31, healthy until the last two days. Callie did a good many
hunter shows, and a little dressage...just shows that a well-managed and cared
for horse of any breed can live a good, long life. Shirley used Callie as a
lesson horse sometimes, but never more than once a day, and usually more like
2-3 times a week. Callie was the first TB I ever met. She was 19 when I met
her and if I could have talked Shirley out of her, I would have bought her.
She was a grand old gal. Not all TB's are flighty and crazy.
