Ugh -- pushed send too soon:
Incidentally Janice, using John Lyons' tapes and methods and a roundpen
is what got Eitill halter trained and gentled down as an unhandled
3-year-old. I would watch a bit of tape, scribble some notes, then run
out to the round pen to try it.
In two weeks, Eitill was standing loose, relaxed, in the round pen to
have his feet trimmed for the first time in his life without it involving a
chute and a snubbing pole.
Anyway, my point: Sometimes you have to separate the method or the
philosophy behind the method from the person using it to see the value in
it. I personally think John Lyons' Round Pen reasoning has helped more
horses than hurt. But that isn't to say it is for every horse, every
owner, and every situation. For me, with three Icelandic mustangs who
needed shots, worming, and feet trimming ASAP on my hands, it was a life
saver.
