Suffice it to say that I'd be very skeptical about how anyone could say what
did, or didn't affect the horse in such an accident, especially if they
didn't see the incident.  I've seen leather break in such a stress (halters,
reins, etc.) and usually the leather breaks instantly, probably before any
serious stress can occur to the horse's muscluoskeletal system.  It's why
I'm a big fan of breakaway halters - mine seldom break, because my horses
don't generally pull, but in a crisis, I'd usually prefer a broken halter to
an injured horse.

Such an incident as you reported DOES point out one more hazard of using
bits - always the lesser of the evils to pick though.  But, I don't feel
that's any justification for using a noseband - any connection is just too
vague for me to trust, considering the other negatives associated with them.
