I think Black Bart has already stuck. The Outer Banks is famous for its history with pirates - they were a favorite stomping ground of the likes of Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard - I think he was killed near Nags Head. When I showed Cary his picture and told him he is Black Bart, he just immediately assumed that was some local historical figure, and he latched onto the name. When you think of it in that way, Black Bart does have sort of a pirate ring to it, right? ARR ARR ARR! The actual story is that the crew just named him after the vet who cared for him - Bart, and added "black" just as the obvious descriptor, but that seriously lacks local color. I guess Cary needed a pirate pony to go along with his little Princess Buttercup. Hmm...wonder if he'd agree to rename him Roberts, as in the Dread Pirate Roberts? :) Or maybe Inygo Montoya - that's pretty cool, since Bart is a pure Spanish Colonial horse. Karen Thomas, NC
