Remember, horses are masters at figuring out intent and context. That doesn't mean we have a license to over-react to everything, but if they surprise us and hurt us, then they can typically gauge that from our reactions. Think about the herd behavior. Brunka and Bjola can be peacefully eating out of the same hay pile, when Brunka happens to grab THE bite that Bjola was aiming for - then there's a flurry of butt-shoving and squealing....and a minute later, they may again be quietly sharing the same pile of hay.
