Hello, I hang out on this site (but have not posted much) and have
learned a lot from the members.

I'm asking if anyone has encountered this health problem with their
Icelandic horse?

Last week, I noticed that Bo, my 5-year-old Icelandic gelding (who
has been an undisputedly easy keeper since I've owned him for the
past 4-1/2 years), was lame in his front feet and had two swollen
nodules under his jaw and his nose was swollen. I called our vet –
he took x-rays of his front feet/legs (the vet initially diagnosed
founder), and he gave Bo an injection of cortisone and an
antihistamine for the swelling in his nose. The vet also drew blood
for testing.

The x-rays came back clear (what a relief!), but the vet said Bo has
an infection in his muscular system. Results of the blood testing
showed a very high white cell count. Please note that we couldn't see
any bites/cuts/wounds on Bo. The vet prescribed an antibiotic
(Tucoprin) and bute for the pain. Today I gave Bo his 7th daily dose
of meds with no real noticeable improvement, although he seems to be
walking a bit better. (The vet told me to check back with him after
I had fed all of the antibiotics - which should be within the next
few days.)

Just when I think I've experienced most everything with my horses'
health – something new pops up. Bo's condition has me anxious – I'm
a mess, hoping and praying that he has a complete recovery – and
soon.
