those cooling scarfs you get in the camper section of walmart you soak in water and they stay cold and wet all day. For the horse, a big sponge on a dog leash. You can drop it into a creek or stream and sponge the horse off from the saddle. But I take large bottles of water and sometimes pour that over the neck and withers. If you stop to rest, take off the saddle and pour cool water over the back.
On even early morning rides when it is still cool but gonna be a scorcher, I wet myself down, clothes and all, and horse too. Janice-- even good horses have bad days sometimes.
