I am fairly new to Icinga. We are in the process setting up Icinga to monitor
our network of about 25k hosts/services. So far we have about 11k
hosts/service configured and Icinga is performing very well. We are excited
about the results we have achieved so far and with how well Icinga has
performed. Our sincere thanks go out to everyone who has contributed to the
Icinga effort.

Unfortunately, I have run into an issue for which I need some help. I have
serially connected hosts (i.e. not Ethernet capable), connected to a terminal
server, which is connected to a switch, which is connected to a router. So the
hierarchy is like this:

Icinga -->router --> switch --> terminal server --> serial hosts

When the router or the switch goes off line, everything downstream is set to
"unreachable" (as expected), except for the serial devices. The status for the
serial devices is reported passively to Icinga by a separate daemon process
every 15 minutes. I have freshness checking set up so that if no input is
received for 45 minutes then check_dummy is called and a warning is generated
to declare the status as "stale". I would have expected that if a device was
"unreachable" then freshness checking would be suspended but that does not
appear to be the case. I am hoping that someone can explain to me what the
expected behavior is in this case and how I might change things to correctly
report the serial devices as "unreachable" when upstream devices are down.

If the behavior I am seeing is the "expected" behavior in Icinga then maybe I
could use a different plugin for the freshness check that could check the
status of the parent device and return "unreachable" if the parent is either
"down" or "unreachable". In that case, I'll need some help on how a plugin
might determine the parent's status. Thanks for you help!
