Thanks Michael. I realized a week ago that using the examples was going to cause me major organization problems as I have close to 100 devices to monitor, all being defined in the windows.cfg file. I created new .cfg files, one for each system and put them in /usr/local/icinga/etc/objects/. I moved all of the definitions for the servers in each system into the new .cfg file for their system and removed them from the windows.cfg file. I added the appropriate cfg_file entries in the icinga.cfg, and now I have a much more manageable situation as I add more servers and systems.
I can see that this new challenge is also from following the examples. I feel much more comfortable with the system.cfg files now that I learned how they worked and the relationship between them and icinga.cfg. I am now studying the docs on templates to get a grasp on them as well. Is that correct? > i would highly advise you to NOT use the examples shipped with upstream tarballs, but rather try to understand how templates work, and which relations / dependencies they might add. especially on inherited attributes, as the docs will help you understand as well. given your question, you are using the windows-server template from templates.cfg, having the hostgroups attribute set to "windows-servers". i would opt for removing this attribute, and adding a different template for hostgroup assignment then. > If so, I could create a server template for each system in the > templates.cfg file by copying the windows-server template and renaming > each new template entry from windows-server to anystream-server, > frontporch-server, etc., and then changing the templates of each host > definition in each system cfg file. > icinga.cfg requires you to use cfg_file OR cfg_dir for such things. i would go for the directories. create a templates/ dir, one for hosts, one for groups, one for contacts, etc. include those with cfg_dir=... in icinga.cfg. within templates/ you might then place a new file containing your windows templates, including for example the basic windows-server template, and a nother one, named windows-server-groups where you'll put all generic hostgroups ... including more than one template is possible. kind regards, michael ps: even if i would like to throw away the examples, and replace them with something usefule, people use that in stock production... > --Hank > > *From:*Wolfgang [mailto:w...@gmx.net] > *Sent:* Thursday, July 19, 2012 1:50 PM > *To:* icinga-users@lists.sourceforge.net > *Subject:* Re: [icinga-users] Hiding the Windows-Servers hostgroup > > Am 19.07.2012 17:40, schrieb Hank Lambert: > > Is there a way to hide the Windows-Servers hostgroup from > displaying in the Hostgroup Overview or Summary?
