What's the purpose of using php as plugin language?
Did you implement that plugin from scratch, or have you looked at 
possible alternatives found on the net/exchanges?

xcache (and apc) are well known for generating segfaults for various 
reasons and these are hard to track down from my experience. maybe 
ubuntu ships a broken package too.
