Postdoctoral in bioinformatics and network biology at University of Lund

Overview

        * Reference No: MPA 2011/439
        * Type of employment: Limit of tenure, full salary
        * Extent: 2 years 100%
        * Location: Department of Clinical Sciences, Malmö, Lund University
        * First day of employment: 2011-10-01 unless otherwise agreedWork
assignments
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in bioinformatics
with focus on network biology. Network biology is a novel way to study
complex disorders by integrating genetics, gene expression data and
physiology. The project aims at studying the gene/protein networks that
drive type 2 diabetes to identify disease mechanisms and targets that
can be exploited for specific treatment. The unique collection of human
islets at LUDC will be used for the studies, but data from other human
tissues as well as rodent models will be analyzed with respect to intra-
 and intertissue gene networks.

The project will use a range of methods including expression SNP
 (eSNP), coexpression and causality analyses, Bayesian modeling and
transcription factor network analyses. Integration of different methods
and development of novel tools will be encouraged. The project will also
 involve investigation of drug networks aiming at network-based drug
repositioning. The post-doc will play a central role in bridging
bioinformatics with experimental and genetic studies at LUDC. The
post-doc will work in close collaboration with wet-lab biologists and
geneticists to facilitate extensive validations of disease models.

The post-doctor will work under the principal investigator and will be
part of LUDC. The successful candidate is expected to stay updated on
the research within LUDC and to actively participate in common
activities, e.g. to disseminate own results within the consortium and to
 assist other projects experimentally or intellectually.

Qualifications
To qualify for appointment the applicant must have a PhD degree or
corresponding academic qualifications. Particular importance is given to
 scientific excellence. The applicant is expected to have a strong
background in bioinformatics. The candidate should have good analytical
skills and a broad knowledge of bioinformatics, human genetics and
statistics. It is an advantage if the candidate has a general knowledge
about molecular biology, but wet-lab experimental experience is not
required.

Some of the following skills are expected: Bioinformatics programming
(Java, Perl, C, BioPerl); experience with genome databases (e.g. those
relating to genome annotation, genetic variants, and metabolic pathways)
 and biological & statistical software packages (e.g. gene
annotation programs, R and Plink) that are relevant for genomics;
programming ability to handle and integrate large data sets; design and
implementation of algorithms for computational analysis of whole genome,
 expression data, genetic variants, and cellular pathways. Previous
research in the diabetes area is not required. The applicant should have
 demonstrated skills in practical supervision of collaborators,
independent work and scientific writing.

Salary: According to individual qualifications. Please indicate salary claims
in the application

Requests: In scientific matters, please contact Anders Rosengren, MD PhD,
Department of Clinical Sciences, Malmö, Tel +46 40-39 11 55,
[email protected]

In general matters, contact Staff Coordinator Anne Vähäniemi, Department
Office, Lund University, Tel: +46 40 39 10 54, [email protected].

Application (written in English) should contain:
        * Curriculum vitae with methodological expertise listed under a
separate heading
        * List of scientific publications
        * Specific motivation why the position applied for suits the applicant
(maximum 1 page (A4))
        * Name, address, telephone number(s) and e-mail of at least two
reference persons.
You can apply electronically via www.lunduniversity.lu.se/o.o.i.s?
id=24914&Dnr=408980&Type=EU `Apply online`. If you are not able to apply
electronically, please
send your application to Registrator, Lunds universitet, Box 117, 221 00 Lund,
Sweden. All transcripts should be confirmed. Please state the
reference number in application. Applications will not be returned.
