Salam hangat, Triana Dyah Summary ‘IndonesianProject <http://internetfreedomfh.strutta.com/entry/552249> for Net Freedom Advocacy’ The restriction access to the internet in Indonesia comes from the application of policies that are not in-compliant with human rights standards related to the freedom of expression, including the internet. While there is lack of policies protecting the freedom of expression related to the right to the internet, more and more policies produced increase the restriction of the enjoyment of freedom of expression. Despite the increase in number of internet users, there have been various restrictions exercised directly or indirectly. It affirms in a number of reports, such as the Freedom house report in 2011, which put Indonesia as a partly free country and ranked 4th among the ASEAN countries in term of internet freedom. Internet users in Indonesia continue to face various restricted and discriminatory policies ranging from arbitrary filtering, the use of criminal sanction against bloggers, intermediary liability to internet providers. Recent policies development in Indonesia in regard to the internet governance has reflected global situation of a long standing tension between maintaining security and ensuring freedom of the people; of which the earlier has justified stringent restriction toward internet users while almost none of adequate policies ensuring remedies and justified legal procedure in the restriction of rights are absent. Filtering by private entity backed by the government such as through Nawala project (http://www.nawala.org <http://www.nawala.org/> ) was introduced under the banner of protecting internet user from pornographic content especially child pornography. Without proper legal procedure, it has affected rights advocacy such as LGBT rights as well as sex education homepage providing awareness on the important of sexual education to teenagers. Other serious restriction to the enjoyment of the right for free access to the internet is the overuse of defamation provision in the penal code and other laws, to criminally sanction internet users as well as bloggers. Cases have continued been reported of bloggers facing criminal sanction due to their activities to support anti-corruption advocacy and human rights. We are going to promoting Internet Governance Forum and human rights standards related to the net freedom as part of the FoE; Improving public awareness on the access to the internet as part of human rights; introducing and promoting practice of self-censorship culture in accessing the internet as a tool to self-protect personal security and privacy; campaigning online etiquette to internet users in Indonesia and providing information in Indonesia Language on internet governance so as to help reach broader audiences.
