Finally a wild and wooly spring day on the Severn for the 2010 Navy Spring Keelboat Promotional Regatta. 13 teams turned up to race aboard USNA's fleet of Colgate 26s.
Following the passage of a cold front overnight, the WNW breeze filled strong and allowed PRO Jahn Tihansky to set the race course right off the USNA seawall. Wind speeds between 18 and 25 knots prevailed compelling reefed mains and no spinnakers for the first 5 races. A prolonged lull in conditions snookered Tihansky into allowing reefs to be shook and spinnakers for races 6 and 7. Of course the breeze came back on providing for some good entertainment both upwind and down as well as some work for the volunteer Midshipmen to sort out repairs.. Navy Team A started strong winning race 1 by a nose but slipped in subsequent races to 6th for the day. Hobart sailed consistently all day finishing no worse than 3rd to take the lead ahead of Cornell in 2nd. Navy Team B is in third one point behind Cornell. The visiting cadets from the Brazilian Naval Academy got a taste of big breeze and tight racing but showed respectably on the race course. 3 more races are scheduled for Sunday. 1.
