INTERNET Y2K STATUS PROJECT: UPDATE
By Mike Todd, President, ISOC-LA

The Internet Society Los Angeles Chapter (ISOC-LA) was to serve as a central point for Internet users and content developers to report any Y2K problems they encountered.

We all know now that there were no major problems during the Y2K transition around the world, though there were a number of interesting and amusing incidents. Even our fears that some individuals would take advantage of the Y2K anxiety to cause further disruptions did not occur. Perhaps the fact that so many of us were watching everything so closely helped convince these individuals to avoid the possibility of being caught. Furthermore, our Y2K reparation experience enabled us to quickly fix those systems that had been overlooked or inadvertently skipped when the rest were fixed or upgraded. Based on such a resounding success, we can see that we spent our resources wisely.

I have recommended that the organizations that cooperated around the world get together to develop a final report of this experience. We have an opportunity to continue this cooperative venture to identify other worldwide problems and implement solutions, and to develop other systems, programs, and activities on a global scale for the benefit of us all.

The Internet Society - Los Angeles Chapter continues to maintain a dedicated site to track any Y2K issues as they unfold. Please visit http://www.WWy2kW.org/ for the latest information.
