Idrisians,

based upon my own experiences and responses from Mark
Cederholm and Peter Schlesinger I conclude that the current
version of SHAPEIDR does not offer full functionality in macro
modus. (See below for details).

It would be nice to receive some confirming words to the list from
the Clark Labs that this will be resolved in IfW3.0.

Regards

Idrisians,

I have got 24 vector point files (with between 4,000 - 15,000 points)
in Idrisi format (without any attribute data) that I would like to export
to SHP format using SHAPEIDR in macro modus.

However, when doing this I am unable to get SHAPEIDR to
automatically start creating the necessary dBase file, which is
required by ArcView to work.

(Citation the SHAPEIDR HELP file:
"3. If a corresponding database file does not exist when exporting
from IDRISI for Windows format to Shapefile, then SHAPEIDR
creates a .DBF file listing a sequential identifier field. ArcView
requires the dBase file for the use of Shapefiles.")

When doing this manually, it works, but the establishment of
the dBase file is painfully slow, in particular the 'Verifying table'
step of that process. It seems like it has a verifying speed of
around 100 points / min!! Given up to 15,000 points, the conversion
may take up to 2.5 hours/file which 'effectively blocks' my PC
during day time.

I look forward to hear whether others have had the same problems
and found solutions that either enables the automatic creation of
the dBase files in macro modus (at night-time), or if this is
currently not feasible, speeds up the process in the manual modus.

I use a WinNT4.0/PII 300MHz & IfW2.0.
My SHAPEIDR.exe file is dated 27 feb 1997.

I have also encountered this bug, and at my website warn people
not to use the macro version of SHAPEIDR. I also notified Clark
Labs some months ago, so hopefully the next version should be
OK.

Sindre,

I notified IDRISI tech support about this a little more than a year
ago. To my knowledge there has not been a fix. It caused me to
change software for an entire project, because I couldn't efficiently
move data between IDRISI and ArcView. It can be done using
ArcInfo, building, and arcshaping, but that too is a pain.
